This is very ancient place known for its tradition and culture.
An ancient linear measuring scale (800 A.D.) "Mannai " (Mannai Kol) with two plus (+) marks having total length of 113.5 inches was found by one of the authors of this article Sthapathi V.Raman at Shree Kailasanathar temple situated at Alambakkam, Tiruchirapalli District. In the near by stone inscription, a land of " Mannai Kol four and half" with this measurement land was measured and given as gift. So the actual measurement of the linear scale "Mannai" was 510.75 inches. Interestingly we shall find if the scale divided by 24 it is " 21.28125" inches (Ezekiel’s long cubit 21 inches).
There are Siva Shrine, Varadaraja-Perumal Temple and other temples.
INSCRIPTIONS OF RAJAKESARIVARMAN No. 314.(A.R. No. 705 of 1909.)found at Alambakkam.
On the north wall of the central shrine, Selliyamman temple.
The inscription is slightly damaged. Like the above this is also assignable to Aditya I. It records that a quarter veli of wet land which had been endowed by the sabha of Dantivarma-mangalam previously for the repairs of the srivimana of the Saptamatri temple, was now assigned by them for a flower-garden to the (same ?) temple. The name Dantivarma-mangalam found for Alambakkam in the inscription suggests that the village should have been founded by the Pallava king Dantivarman, who is known to have held sway in these regions and is also surmised to have built the Kailasantha temple at this place (M.E.R. for 1910, II, 7.)
At the dawn of the Jesuit Mission in India, a ray of Faith began to shine in the land of South India and also in the areas of Alambakkam, Elackurichy and Vadugarpet. Fr.Constantine Beschi, known, as 'Veeramamunivar' was the pioneer in institution of Catholic faith in these places. At present, St. Thomas is the patron for the parish church at Alambakkam.
